The moms got their turn in May, and now it’s dad time! Father’s Day is just a couple of weeks away, and today on the Simple Real Estate blog, we want to honor our fathers and explore the things that light them up, especially when it comes to real estate. So what are dads looking for when shopping for a house? In our experience, it’s more than just the cliches like a garage or a backyard. Dads want homes that support their work, hobbies, and family time.

Function Meets Family

Dads today are hands-on and in tune with the needs of their families and children. They’re seeking quality time and, thus, want spaces that allow for it. In our house hunts around the Sacramento region and the Bay Area, we see dads prioritizing open kitchens, connected living/dining spaces, and safe outdoor areas for kids to play. Smart features are usually a plus, too (think security systems, lighting control, timed sprinkler systems, and energy efficiency). And of course, when it comes to their kids, dads want to ensure their home is located near great schools and educational opportunities.

The Dream Garage or Workspace

Many dads are known for being handy and having hands-on hobbies, so it's no surprise that a spacious garage or dedicated workshop is a massive win. Extra storage, built-in workbenches, or even space for a project car or weekend DIY activities can be a big draw. Let’s not forget that many of these spaces double as hangout spots for friends and family, so dads see them as functional and beneficial for strengthening relational bonds.

Home Offices and Personal Space

Hybrid and remote work have become the new reality for many families, and we’ve seen a continuation of this trend among buyers who want a quiet, functional home office. Even if the dads in your life are occasionally commuting to Sacramento or San Francisco, it's likely true that they are still doing some amount of work at home. And even if dads are not looking for a dedicated office space, it’s not surprising that they light up at the mention of a “man cave,” home gym, or media room. It depends on what the dad in your life is passionate about, but we’ve never seen one disappointed to gain a personal space for work or hobbies. It’s all about finding balance and a home that serves everyone’s needs.

Just like with any other home buyer, dads are looking for houses that support their lifestyle. A great home for a great father supports both family life and personal interests. So, if you’re out house hunting this June, don’t forget to keep in mind the special man in your life, the one who works hard, shows up for his family, and imparts valuable life lessons. Ask him what's on his list, and we’ll take it from there! If you’re looking for a home that the whole family, including Dad, will love, let’s find it together.
